Canadians are Heavy Lunch Spenders, but Looking to Cut Down

TORONTO — Canadians have expensive lunchtime spending habits, according to a new study by Visa Canada, but some respondents said they are looking to slim down their spending.    

The study showed that 61 per cent of Canadians who buy lunch are spending between $7 and $13 while nine per cent are spending between $14 and $25.

Compared to other provinces, Ontario consumers buy lunch more often, with 20 per cent eating out three or more days per week, compared to the national average of 15 per cent who eat out.  

Half of Quebec respondents said they bring their lunch to work every day, followed closely by Albertans (43 per cent) and then British Columbians (39 per cent).

“One of the most telling findings of this survey was that 30 per cent of Canadians plan on spending less on lunch this year,” says Melissa Cassar, head of corporate and public affairs at Visa Canada.
