CFIA Issues Salad Warning

OTTAWA — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall of salad bags from Compliments brand and River Ranch and Sysco Natural, due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

The CFIA reported some salad bags have been distributed to restaurants, hospitals and nursing homes.

“In addition, in-store-produced products containing lettuce such as salads, sandwiches or wraps purchased prior to May 20, 2012 from IGA and Sobeys stores in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Sobeys, Price Chopper or Foodland stores in Ontario should be discarded and not consumed. These clerk-served foods contain lettuce, which may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes,” reads a CFIA statement.

There have been no reported illnesses, but, according to officials, the effects of Listeria may appear long after consumption.

The importer, Sobeys Inc., located in Mississauga, Ont., is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
