Coca Cola Uses QR Codes for Promotion

ATLANTA — Coca-Cola cold drink cups used at U.S and Canadian fast-food restaurants will soon carry QR codes, which can be scanned by customers’ Apple camera phones.

According to mediapost.com, more than 500,000 scans are expected in support of Coke’s “Save the Polar Bears” campaign, promoting the company’s US$2-million pledge to the World Wildlife Fund’s polar bear habitat conservation efforts in the Arctic.

The scanned code leads to a Facebook page where users can throw snowballs at their friends. Mediapost.com reports that the code, provided by mobile barcode solutions provider ScanBuy, will appear on 1.4-billion Coke cans in the U.S. and Canada, posters and other promotional materials.

The campaign runs until February.
