TORONTO — Seven Canadian organizations, including grocery and foodservice operations, were recognized for a commitment to Fair Trade at the first annual Canadian Fairtrade Awards held this past weekend at Hank’s restaurant in Toronto.
“Global supply of fair trade-certified products is growing, as is concern among consumers about the impacts of what they buy,” said Tia Loftsgard, director of Business Development.
“We wanted to recognize the important role of retailers and foodservice providers in connecting consumers’ values and beliefs with their buying habits by giving visibility to fair-trade certified products and showcase examples of how this is being done.”
The winners included Federated Co-operatives Limited, Choices Markets, Van Houtte, Kicking Horse Café, Camino (by La Siembra), The Big Carrot, Manitoba Liquor Marts (MLCC) and Just Us! Coffee, deemed “Canada’s Favourite Fairtrade Certified Product” by consumers.
Company executives are encouraged to seek nominations for next year’s awards. More information is available at fairtrade.ca/retail.
