TOKYO — The Japanese government is preparing to buy and burn beef tainted by radiation following the country’s recent earthquake and ensuing Fukushima nuclear disaster, AFP reports.
According to AFP, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has been pegged to cover the costs, which could amount to the equivalent of about $25 million.As part of the plan, meat industry groups are purchasing all contaminated beef from member wholesalers and retailers, and have asked that TEPCO compensate them for “purchasing and other costs.”
In the interim, the government has banned all shipments of Fukushima beef.
