MONTREAL – Vancouver’s Cibo Trattoria has taken the top prize on enRoute magazine’s eighth annual list of the country’s best new restaurants, which considers establishments that opened between summer 2008 and summer 2009 and “advance the Canadian culinary identity.”

“This is decadence, circa 2009. It’s also one of the most exciting things to happen to the way we eat in years,” says contributing food writer for enRoute, Chris Nuttall-Smith, discussing Cibo Trattoria’s win.

The top ten list, from top to bottom, also includes: The Black Hoof in Toronto; Rush in Calgary; Atelier in Ottawa; Murray Street in Ottawa; Cabane à sucre Au pied de Cochon in Saint-Benoit de Mirabel, Que.; Ship to Shore in Malpeque Bay, P.E.I.; Pizzeria Libretto in Toronto; Culina Highlands in Edmonton; and La salle à manger in Montreal.

This year’s winning restaurants were said to have “turned out extraordinarily good cooking from largely young chefs using simple ingredients, traditional techniques and a fresh perspective.”
