EDMONTON — Plans to build a new Marriott Hotel, as part of the extension of the Edmonton International Airport, may have been shelved years ago, but things have changed. Last week, Platinum Investments announced that a 189-room Marriott Courtyard Hotel, with foodservice amenities, will open in conjunction with the airport’s Expansion 2012 project.

“We are thrilled to partner with Platinum Investments Ltd. to bring this leading global hotel brand to EIA,” says Peter McCart, EIA vice-president, Marketing and Business Development.

Platinum spokesman Rahim Meghji said the company was excited and honoured to be partnering with EIA on such an important project. “The family came to Edmonton (from Tanzania) 35 years ago and bought a 10-room motel. Now we own the top two hotels in the city.”

The modern eight-storey, 190,000-square-foot hotel will feature regular, executive and presidential suites, 10,000 square feet of banquet and meeting facilities, a full-service restaurant and lounge, fitness facilities, an indoor pool and whirlpool spa, wired and wireless Internet services and airline service check-in.

The hotel will connect to the airport via a heated pedway.
