EDMONTON — Chef Maurice O’Flynn passed away on Nov. 5 at Royal Alexandra Hospital in Edmonton at the age of 78.

Born in Cardiff, Wales, O’Flynn moved to Canada in 1974 and settled in Edmonton. His passion has left a lasting mark on the Canadian culinary scene; he was a founding member and executive director of the Alberta Culinary Arts Foundation from 1983 to 1993 and a driven competitor who led the Canadian Culinary Olympic National team to win Gold at the 1992 IKA Culinary Olympics. O’Flynn also ran champchefs.com — an archive documenting culinary competitions and profiling the members of culinary teams from around the world.

O’Flynn passed on his culinary passion to his son Ryan, who is executive chef at The Guild in Calgary.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Howard & McBride Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home in Edmonton.
