TORONTO — Menchie’s, a  self-serve yogurt chain that lets guests decorate their frozen treats with a choice of more than 70 toppings, recently announced plans to set up shop in Western Canada.

The company signed a development agreement with Yogurtworld Franchising Corp. and the Calgary-based Empire West Investments and plans to open 33 stores in B.C. and Alberta in the next five years.

“We are excited to bring Menchie’s to Western Canada,” said Empire West Investment’s Marc Stanlioff. “We spent a lot of time researching this industry and its potential. Menchie’s is growing very quickly, but not just for the sake of growth. It’s growing because the public loves it wherever it opens. The long lines and busy stores are a testament to that.”

Empire hopes to open the first three stores in the next three months and says expansion to more provinces is a possibility.
