Ontario Ban Lifted on Aykroyd Vodka

TORONTO — Dan Aykroyd was in Toronto last week to celebrate the lifting of a ban on his premium Crystal Head Vodka.

The Newfoundland-made spirit was banned in Ontario after its release due to negative associations with the skull-shaped bottle. “It’s an image that’s commonly associated with death,” LCBO spokesperson Chris Layton, told The Globe and Mail last year.

In order to sell the vodka in Ontario, Aykroyd agreed to redesign the packaging so the skull wouldn’t be as overt. “The consumer really pulled it through for us,” Aykroyd told The Globe, speaking of an online campaign that demanded the sale of the vodka.

The Newfoundland-based spirit won a double-gold medal from the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits competition and retails for $59.95.
