Reps from P.E.I.’s restaurant industry greeted Premier Robert Ghiz during the first day of the provincial election campaign to discuss the struggles they face on the Island.

“The restaurant industry is an integral part of the social and economic fabric of communities across the Island,” said Luc Erjavec, vice-president of Atlantic Canada for the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA).

“The industry hopes the Premier’s decision to begin the campaign by meeting with restaurant operators is a clear indication of the value and importance he places on this vital industry.”

The restaurant industry combined with the Island’s booming tourism industry makes dining out a top tourist activity. According to a recent poll, 81 per cent of Maritimers agree restaurants encourage travel and tourism.

According to the CRFA, P.E.I.’s restaurant industry comprises 320 small business operators generating $226 million in sales. Every dollar spent at a restaurant generates close to twice that amount in the economy.
