ST. JOHN’S, N.L. — A taste of Syria is coming to St. John’s.

The Sumac Middle Eastern Market and Eatery, owned and operated by Middle Eastern ex-pats Roxanne and Tarek Hani Jaml, will stock dishes and groceries not currently offered in the St. John’s area.

“[It’s] totally Arabic style,” Roxanne told CBC Radio’s St. John’s Morning Show. “It’s going to have a pantry where customers can get halal foods, authentic Middle Eastern foods, and some Middle Eastern products.”

Before launching the concept, set to open at the end of May, the Jamls conducted a poll of local residents to ensure there would be interest and demand for their products.

Traditional Middle Eastern dishes such as falafel and shawarma will be readily available, but there will be also be Canadian-Syrian meal fusion offerings such as shawarma poutine. Everything will be made from scratch and nothing at the eatery will be pre-packaged.
