TORONTO — Bar Alo’s Shane Mulvany has been selected to represent Canada at the 11th Havana Club Cocktail Grand Prix Final taking place from May 30 to June 4.

Mulvany will travel to Havana, Cuba and face 40 competitors from around the world as they attempt to create new savoury cocktails, blending local Cuban ingredients and their own recipes.

Mulvany’s mixology adventures began in his native Ireland and continued with stints in London and New York City. He moved to Toronto in 2012 and since his arrival has mixed drinks at popular hotspots such as The Chase, Dailo and Bar Alo.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be representing Canada at the global final of the Havana Club Cocktail Grand Prix,” says Mulvany. “To me, the king of all rum is Cuban rum — and Havana Club is the standard bearer. The Maestros Roneros (master rum-makers) create and blend some of the finest rums and have an incredible understanding of the product and how to use it best. This is constantly something that inspires me.”

The winner will work with Havana Club on various rum-related projects, will be a judge for the next final and serve as a Havana Club consultant for two years.
