Trading Cellphones for Pizza

TORONTO — It’s Earth Month, which means more than 380 participating Pizza Pizza locations will double as drop-off centres for old cellphones and handheld devices once again, well sort of.

More specifically, Pizza Pizza customers can now trade in previously used cellphones for a free slice of pepperoni or cheese pizza, all while contributing to a worthwhile cause through the pizzeria’s annual Cells for Slices recycling program. Money generated from the sale of the phones is donated to Food Banks Canada.

“Pizza Pizza has a longstanding tradition of working towards environmentally sustainable business practices,” said Pat Finelli, the chain’s chief marketing officer. “We want to do our part to encourage and reward other people for recycling and supporting local food banks at the same time.”

Along with the plastics and metals found in cellphones, the batteries contain chemicals that can be hazardous to the environment and should be kept out of landfills. A recycled or refurbished phone can yield between $2 and $5 for Food Banks Canada.

Since the program’s launch in 2003, the company has collected 4,656 mobile phones.
