TORONTO — Three foodservice operations made the cut in Canadian Business’s 2016 Profit 500 rankings, recognizing the country’s fastest-growing companies.
Calgary-based Fiasco Gelato was the country’s top ranking foodservice company, snagging fourth position on Canada’s Fastest-Growing Retail Companies and ranking 62nd overall with five-year revenue growth of 1,224 per cent. The company got its start as a single gelato shop, but today, the bulk of its business is focused on wholesale, though the company still operates a café at its factory in Calgary. Fiasco Gelato is currently available at retailers, cafés and restaurants in Alberta, B.C., Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan.
Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria weighed in at number-9 among the list’s retail companies and ranked 106th in the overall rankings. The Richmond, B.C.-based fast-casual chain — made up of franchised restaurants across B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario — boasts five-year revenue growth of 680 per cent between 2010 and 2015.
Mabel’s Bakery & Specialty Foods — a small, Toronto-based bakery chain — also made the list, ranking 232nd on the list and 15th among the country’s retailers. The chain, which has three Toronto locations, recorded five-year revenue growth of 238 per cent. The concept offers home-style artisan breads, pastries and ready-made meals using all natural, local and organic, non-genetically modified ingredients.
“It’s an honour to have made the Profit 500 ranking,” says Lorraine Hawley, president and co-owner of Mabel’s. “We started Mabel’s with a simple desire to bring great-tasting, high-quality food to the community. This achievement with Profit 500 is testament to our team’s passion, expertise and dedication to quality — and that’s reflected in our customers’ loyalty to our business.”
