MONTREAL — Celine Dion’s husband and manager, Rene Angelil, is rumoured to be part of a group of investors vying for Schwartz’s Deli, an iconic Montreal restaurant.
According to the Montreal Gazette, while Angelil is involved in the reported $10-million deal, the key player is Paul Nakis, a well-known restaurateur.
It’s reported that, along with Nakis, Angelil and his cousin, Paul Sara, are part of a group of investors negotiating to purchase the Deli on Saint-Laurent Boulevard.
Over the years, the 80-year-old restaurant has attracted celebrity clientele such as The Rolling Stones, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie and Joan Rivers. Highly regarded for avoiding chemicals and preservatives when smoking its meat, Schwartz’s has, what’s called, the “schmutz” factor — intense flavour gained in the smokehouse that has years of spices infused in its walls.
