Air Canada Ordered to Create Allergen Buffer Zones

OTTAWA — Air Canada has been ordered to create a buffer zone for people with severe nut or peanut allergies.

The June 16 ruling from the Canadian Transport Agency, gave the airline 30 days to implement a policy and a peanut buffer zone, which would include the row where the person with allergies is seated as well as the row of seats directly in front and behind them.

This ruling follows an October 2010 ruling, which Air Canada appealed citing undue hardship in implementing the policy, stating no flight kitchen can guarantee meals and snacks are entirely free of traces of nuts and peanuts.

In the latest ruling, the Transport Agency said affected passengers should bring their own food on board an aircraft and carry wet wipes, sanitizer and Epi-pens to complement the effective accommodation provided by the buffer zone.
