BEAUMONT, Alta. — Turning to the public to raise funds for a new restaurant venture is catching on, with news another entrepreneurial couple has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to open a restaurant in Beaumont, Alta.

Darren and Sylvia Cheverie are hoping to raise $95,000 to open Chartier, a rustic, Quebec-style brasserie. “Chartier is a love-letter to Beaumont, its history and our community. You’ll find tributes to the roots of Beaumont spread throughout the room — maps, old photos, reclaimed wood from old barns around the town and, most importantly, a ‘family wall’ acknowledging all the wonderful people who helped make Chartier come to life,” reads a description on the Chartier Kickstarter page.

The duo will work with chefs Brad Lazarenko, founder of Culina Family of Restaurants and Yvan Chartrand, owner of Boulangerie Bonjour, both in Edmonton, to develop a menu of authentic French food, including tourtière, local duck and charcuterie, served with Old World wine and B.C. varieties as well as local craft brews and spirits. The interior will feature exposed brick with rustic wood accents, reminiscent of Quebec.

The duo has raised more than $50,000 of the $90,000 goal.
