B.C. To Introduce Vaccine Card for Recreational Activities

VICTORIA — Starting September 13, the B.C. government will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for anyone who wants to attend a concert, sporting event, movie, restaurant, nightclub, casino or fitness class. At first, British Columbians will only require proof of one dose, but by October 24, two doses will be required.

The vaccine card will be available digitally, however, there will be an alternative option for those who don’t use a smartphone. There will also be an exemption for children under the age of 12, but not for people who are unable to receive the vaccine for health or religious reasons.

Moreover, proof of COVID-19 vaccination will be required for people visiting from out of province and visitors from outside Canada will be required to show proof they used to enter the country, in addition to their passport.

The new measures will be in place until at least January 31, 2022. The vaccine cards will not be required at grocery stores, retail, indoor religious gatherings or healthcare settings.

B.C. is the second province to require proof of vaccination. In July, Quebec announced plans for a vaccine certificate starting September 1 that will cover non-essential services, excluding retail. Similarly, Manitoba offered an immunization card earlier this month for people who are fully immunized. However, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario have no official plans to introduce a similar concept for social activities.
