RICHMOND, B.C. — Baan Lao, helmed by chef Nutcha Phanthoupheng, has been awarded the title of Best Restaurant in Canada at the 2024 World Culinary Awards.

Now in its fifth year, the World Culinary Awards recognizes outstanding culinary destinations, hotel restaurants, training institutions, and landmark establishments from around the globe. Baan Lao’s award reflects the restaurant’s exceptional quality and innovative dishes, commitment to sustainability and an unforgettable dining experience that has captivated both locals and global visitors alike. Previous recipients of this award in Canada include St. Lawrence, Toque and Alo.

“We’re incredibly honoured to receive the title of Best Restaurant in Canada from the World Culinary Awards,” says Phanthoupheng. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and passion of our entire team. We’re deeply grateful to our loyal patrons for their support, and we remain committed to elevating the dining experience and sharing the beauty of Thai cuisine with the world.”

Chef Phanthoupheng has previously garnered numerous local awards and accolades for both herself and Baan Lao, including Best Restaurant, Best Fine Dining, Best Chef, and Best Thai food in both Richmond and Vancouver. This year, she has also created the world’s first sommelier-led Thai tea afternoon experience at Baan Lao. She also became the first Thai chef in Canada to be named on both Canada’s Best 100 list and La Chaine des Rotisseurs, winning the title of Maitre Rotisseur in 2022.

“Tourism Richmond is beyond thrilled that Baan Lao has been named the Best Restaurant in Canada at the 2024 World Culinary Awards,” says Nancy Small, CEO of Tourism Richmond. “The dining experience is one-of-a-kind and the food is inspired, as is its location right on the beautiful Steveston waterfront. We’re proud to continue spreading the word about Richmond as a unique and world-famous culinary destination, and Baan Lao is a key part of that story.”
