Banu Restaurant Iranian Presents a New Monthly Speaker Series

TORONTO — A Toronto restaurant has launched a new monthly speaker series, Unforked Salon, which aims to connect food, culture and ideas, while challenging the way diners engage with what’s on their plates. Co-directed by Samira Mohyeddin and Rachna Contractor, the series is hosted by Banu Restaurant Iranian.

Unforked Salon offers guests the chance to share a communal three-course dinner — served family style — while engaging in a lively discussion around issues of race, politics, nationalism and class as they relate to food.

The series kicked off November 6, with social-historian Rick Halpern leading a conversation titled “Columbian Exchange: How New World Foods Transformed the World’s Cuisines.” On December 4, food writer Suresh Doss will lead a discussion about how Toronto’s suburbs are defining food culture behind the scenes. While the city of Toronto continues to receive global praise for its culinary prowess, many often overlook the diverse food culture outside of the downtown corridor. Unforked Salon guests will be asked to consider the idea that the city’s best international food is not in the city, but in its suburbs. Tickets are $75 and can be purchased by emailing [email protected]
