OTTAWA — The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) is set to petition Health Canada to approve beef irradiation to kill dangerous E. coli bacteria in a range of beef products.
“Food irradiation is likely the most effective intervention remaining that we don’st already use. And, when you add irradiation, on top of the existing food-safety system, we could essentially eliminate E.-coli-related illness from beef products,” said Mark Klassen, the CCA’s director of Technical Services as quoted by CTV News.
The CCA originally petitioned the government about this issue in 1998; that petition was unsuccessful. The updated proposal comes as a result of recent e-coli outbreaks in beef that made national headlines.
