Beef Recall Expands In Canada, Enters U.S.

TORONTO — The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has expanded its recent Canadian beef recall to include additional ground beef products and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has extended the recall into the U.S.

“The public warning issued on September 21, 2012 has been expanded to include additional ground beef products, because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7,” reads the statement on the CFIA’s website.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has tested beef products entering the border and announced a Public Health Alert for raw boneless beef trim products imported from Canada by XL Foods, Inc. that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. “FSIS testing of raw boneless beef trim product from Canadian Establishment 38, XL Foods, Inc., confirmed positive for E. coli O157:H7 on September 3, 2012,” reads a statement on the FSIS website.

The manufacturer, XL Foods Inc., Edmonton, and various retailers, processors and distributors are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.
