PETERBOROUGH — A Peterborough McDonald’s franchisee’s campaign for Fort McMurray relief donations has raised more than $1 million.

Jamie Campbell and his wife, Terri Van Zant, who own five McDonald’s locations in Peterborough launched the ‘Big Mac for Fort Mac’ campaign. For 10 days, their locations donated $1 from every Big Mac sale to the Canadian Red Cross for Fort McMurray fire relief efforts, raising more than $17,000.

“Big Mac for Fort Mac — it works, right?” says Campbell, added his staff loved the idea and spread the word around social media. McDonald’s Canada then took the campaign to the next level, donating $1 from every Big Mac sale across the country to the Canadian Red Cross. In total, the national campaign raised $1,055,000.

“Staff had unmatched enthusiasm,” says Campbell. “This community and our people made it happen.”
