MISSISSAUGA, Ont. — The International Centre was abuzz last night with the spirit of 40 years of leadership serving as the backdrop of the Canadian Association of Foodservice Professionals (CAFP). The evening highlighted the association’s longevity and commitment to excellence in foodservice while raising funds for scholarships.

Past presidents joined Toronto branch president Steve Croft on stage to recognize the work of many of the association’s leaders, including Ken Jewitt (1976-1977), who spearheaded the education tenant; Glo McNeill (1983-1984); and Andy Jackson (2003-2004).

It was also a night for awarding excellence, and Domenic Primucci of Pizza Nova and Kevin Collins of Friends of We Care took home Trillium Awards from Ontario Restaurant News for Restaurateur of the Year and Newsmaker of the Year, respectively. Show emcee Angelo Colallilo, director of Operations, Eastern Canada at Complete Purchasing Services Inc., was also named Food Executive of the Year.

The outstanding service, dedication and social advancement of the Canadian hospitality industry was highlighted during Kostuch Media’s Hans Bueschkens Award of Merit. This year, the company recognized Dairy Queen Canada for its commitment to improving the lives of sick children through its sponsorship of the Children’s Miracle Network, raising more than $2.8 million last year alone. “It is truly an honour to accept this award on behalf of the Dairy Queen franchisees and corporate staff members,” said Denise Hutton, VP of Marketing, Dairy Queen Canada, upon accepting the award from Foodservice and Hospitality magazine editor and publisher, Rosanna Caira. “Dairy Queen is all about creating smiles and stories, and we are very proud of what we’re able to do in the community.”

Other stories were shared during the evening, including one from venture capitalist Arlene Dickinson. The Dragon’s Den personality and president of Venture Communications shared her path from being an unemployed single mom of four at the age of 31 to becoming a marketing executive, using her life experience to guide her business decisions. Dickinson’s message about the hard work and risks in achieving success was echoed by many of the leaders on stage that night.

Stay tuned for CAFP’s 2014 National Conference at the Delta Ottawa Centre Hotel on April 23.
