Canada Bread to Sell to Premium Brands

TORONTO — Baring any last-minute changes, Premium Brands Holding Corporation will be the new home of Canada Bread Company, the fresh-prepared sandwich business 90 per cent owned by Maple Leaf Foods.

The fresh-prepared sandwich arm includes three facilities — one in Etobicoke, Ont., another in Gatineau, Que., and another in Laval, Que. (set to close in March). The facilities employ about 280 people in total and services customers in the grocery, convenience, gas station and retail sectors in Ontario and Quebec.

“This sale will allow us to concentrate our resources and management focus on growth in our core fresh bakery and pasta businesses,” said Richard Lan, president and CEO, Canada Bread. “We will also benefit from an ongoing supplier relationship with Premium Brands.”
