Canada’s Food Safety Called into Question

TORONTO — Rick Holley, professor of food safety and food microbiology at the University of Manitoba, is not convinced that the investigation that followed the deadly listeriosis outbreak, linked to a Maple Leaf plant in 2008, has instituted enough changes to make Canada’s food safe.

The professor’s analysis of the matter was recently published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, but an in-depth look at the issue and all its players is detailed in a Globe and Mail story.

“If politicians want to stand up and say we have the safest food supply in the world, they’ve got to come clean and do something to make it that way, because right now it’s certainly not,” Holley told Carly Weeks of the Globe.
