WHISTLER, B.C. — More than 140 competitors and 10,000 cheese lovers gathered for the eighth edition of the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival, hosted by Dairy Farmers of Canada on Aug. 16.
Competitors chased an 11-pound wheel of Boerenkaas, produced by British Columbia cheesemaker Natural Pastures, down Blackcomb Mountain. Rebecca Sharar from Washington won the women’s race and Paul Nguyen from Whistler won the men’s race. Each went home with a wheel of the Canadian cheese and Whistler season’s ski passes for two. In addition, there was a children’s race with 145 competitors.
“Another Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival, another great year. Year-after-year, the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival surpasses our expectations,” said Sandra Da Silva, assistant director, External Communications, Dairy Farmers of Canada. “Dairy Farmers of Canada is thrilled to share the love, passion and enthusiasm for Canadian cheese produced from coast-to-coast with Canadians and visitors from all over the world again.”
Cheese lovers also enjoyed cheese tasting seminars, recipe demos with chef Ned Bell and sampling dozens of delicious Canadian cheeses made from 100-per-cent Canadian milk.
