Cellphones, Texting, Laptops Frustrate Restaurateurs

WINNIPEG — Cellphone ringing, table texting and laptops on tables are a growing annoyance for restaurateurs, according to Maureen Scurfield of the Winnipeg Free Press.

“[Restauraters] are powerless to stop the trend,” she writes. “If they prohibited people from using their electronic devices, they’sd lose half their customers.”

Coffee shops are hardest hit. “People will spend $3 and some of them stay for many hours,” Rafe Abdullah of Second Cup, told Scurfield. Kicking people out is not an option. “We don’st want our store to get that reputation,” said Abdullah.
