WOLFVILLE, N.S. — Chef Michael Howell and Mary Harwell, owners of the Wolfville, N.S.-based Tempest restaurant, will turn the restaurant over to new ownership, effective Aug. 1.

Chef Dave Smart, 43, the restaurant’s current chef de cuisine, will be taking the reins. A graduate of Le Cordon Bleu in Ottawa, he worked at the Arc Lounge and Atelier with Marc Lepine in Ottawa.

Howell’s increased problems with arthritis were a major factor in the decision to sell. “It’s pretty painful. Not only have I got arthritis in both wrists, but I’ve got some carpal tunnel and a torn ligament in my right wrist. I find it hard to cut, let alone lift heavy stuff. That’s one of the overarching reasons,” Howell told Halifax’s Chronicle Herald.

Howell plans to stay involved in the local culinary scene, serving as a culinary ambassador for Wolfville, Kings County and Nova Scotia. He also has plans to continue to grow his culinary tour business.
