Chipotle Warns Climate Change May Affect Menu Item Availability

DENVER — Chipotle’s quarterly filing last month with the Securities and Exchange Commission caused a stir when it alerted investors to certain risk factors, including the possibility of climate change affecting the availability of guacamole and salsa.

“Increasing weather volatility or other long-term changes in global weather patterns, including any changes associated with global climate change, could have a significant impact on the price or availability of some of our ingredients,” it read, adding that the company may choose to temporarily suspend serving menu ingredients such as guacamole or salsa in the event of cost increases.

Chipotle reps told The Toronto Star that it was a routine disclosure and should not be blown out of proportion. But, Sylvain Charlebois, the associate dean of research and graduate studies at the University of Guelph’s College of Management and Economics in Ontario, told the newspaper restaurants should still be concerned about climate change. “The effects of climate change expand beyond just avocados,” he said. “It’s affecting everything.”
