City of Toronto Approves Mandatory Menu Labelling

TORONTO — Following months of debate, Toronto’s Board of Health has approved mandatory menu labelling, which may require chain restaurants to post sodium and calorie counts on their menus.

The Board voted 9 to 2 in favour of the report, according to The Globe and Mail. The legislation would affect chain restaurants in Toronto with 10 or more outlets nationwide or at least $10 million in gross annual revenues.

Early Tuesday morning Toronto’s Board of Health posted a comment saying the decision is preliminary and should not be considered final until a meeting with the city clerk. If the decision is not approved, the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) recommends the Board ask the MOH to explore options for a possible municipal menu labelling by-law.
