TORONTO — Arron Carley, of Estiatorio Volos restaurant in Toronto, has won the first round of the Discovered Culinary Competition — a four-month search for Canada’s up-and-coming culinary stars that will culminate at the finals in March.

The judging panel, comprised of local food suppliers, chefs and restaurateurs, said chef Carley made the best overall use of ingredients from the three-course blackbox competition, which featured crab, wonton wrappers, shitake mushrooms, grapefruit, preserved lemons, lamb chops, artichokes, phyllo pastry, blueberry pie filling, gorgonzola cheese and pineapple.

The competition’s grand prize is an all-expense-paid trip to Spain where the winner will train at a two-Michelin starred restaurant. Carley will now advance to compete in the finals at the CRFA Show, which runs from March 4 to 6 at the Direct Energy Centre in Toronto.
