MONTREAL — Protegez-Vous (Protect-You), an online non-profit consumer-protection publication, released a list of the top 50 establishments in Quebec that garnered the heftiest fines in 2012 for unsafe conditions. Issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of Quebec and the division of Food Inspection of the City of Montreal, the list includes grocery stores, restaurants, dairy farms and more.

Eggspectation restaurant took the number-1 spot on the list with fines of a reported $26,000 for seven health-code violations between March 2010 and January 2012. The restaurant, located at 201 Rue Saint-Jacques in Montreal, has since closed.

“We tried to resolve this situation many times and eventually had to close the restaurant in February 2012,” said Enzo Renda, CEO of Eggspectation, which has 16 franchised locations in Canada, the U.S. and India. “This decision was made following a long legal process that also resulted in our ending the agreement with the former franchisee in question, and we are released from any liability for their actions.”
