MONTREAL — Clément Marty is hoping to bring the first Asia-inspired North American cat café to Montreal.

“We would like to introduce the concept of cat café to the cat lovers of Montreal. The goal is to have a social impact and to raise awareness to the animal conditions in Quebec,” reads a statement on the café’s website.

“Cats have a huge beneficial impact on humans,” Marty is quoted as saying in the Toronto Star. “Purring has a positive effect on stress. Many people in Montreal cannot keep animals in their apartments, so I want them to have a place where they can come to unwind and relax.”

Clement launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise $40,000 that would fund everything from furniture to toys and litter boxes for the cats. He has already collected more than $9,000.

Marty is planning to open Café Chat L’Heureux (Happy Cat Café) in the summer.
