Fish Farming in the Prairies

RUMSEY, Alta. — Most people wouldn’t think of Alberta as a breeding ground for fish, but they’d be wrong.

Mark McNaughton and his family, of MDM Aqua Farms, raise tens of thousands of freshwater fish that are shipped to stores in Calgary and Edmonton, according to a Calgary Herald story, which details the popularity and practices of growing fish in the prairie province.

According to the report, the fish grow continuously and are easy to buy year-round. What’s more, tilapia, McNaughton’s specialty, is a popular fish to eat at home and in restaurants. At Calgary’s Catch Restaurant & Oyster Bar, for example, the chef takes advantage of the fish’s availability, sustainability and “culinary flexibility.”
