For the Love of Poutine


TORONTO — For one day in May, Canada’s poutine capital will shift from the province of Quebec to downtown Toronto. Smoke’s Poutinerie is partnering with Major League Eating to bring the World’s top competitive eaters to BMO Field, home of the Toronto Football Club (TFC), for the first-ever Smoke’s Poutinerie World Poutine-Eating Championship.

On May 22, competitive eaters from around the world will eat as much Smoke’s Poutinerie traditional poutine (fries, curd, and gravy) as they can stomach to compete for the distinguished title of World Poutine-Eating Champion and the majority of the event’s $1,500 cash prize.

According to organizers, the event’s star attraction is Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti, the number 3 ranked Major League Eater in the world. Bertoletti, a Chicago chef, holds more than 20 world eating records, for a cornucopia of foods such as waffles, calamari and blueberry pie. Looking for the upset will be Gravy Brown, the world’s number 9 ranked eater and the potato wedge World record holder.

And, proving that competitive eating is not just for the boys, Juliet Lee, an eating champion from Maryland will also be devouring the curds. She’s no slouch. In fact, Lee has a handful of World records to her name. She’s eaten 23 dozen clams in six minutes.
