TORONTO — Mayor Rob Ford is scheduled to attend the opening of Take this Bread, a church-run bakery that supports some of the city’s underprivileged.
Each week residents from the Dan Harrison Community Complex learn how to bake bread that they sell to their fellow tenants for $1.25 each. They also sell bread to nearby restaurants and communion wafers to churches. Participants receive a food handler’s certificate after completing the 11-month bakery program, which will allow them to work in restaurants.“To have people making bread is life-giving, and it means that people down here have food security,” said John Stephenson Jr., manager of Take This Bread. “They know they’re going to get bread at the end of the day.”
The bakery is located inside the All Saints Anglican Church-Community Centre at Dundas and Sherbourne. It received start-up funds from local churches and the Anglican Diocese of Toronto but is expected to be financially self-sufficient by the end of 2013.
The opening will be held at the St. James Cathedral’s Parish House Friday, Sept. 28 from 12:00 p.m. to 1.30 p.m.
