Giant Squid Wash Up on California Beaches

ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. — Giant squid weighing as much as 20 lbs made a splash in Orange County, Calif., when they washed up on a number of beaches.

The odd phenomenon was witnessed in Newport, San Clemente and Oceanside. And, while the numbers of squid might be in your favour, locals say the giant squid aren’t an easy catch.

Dan Phillips told CBS/AP “they fight hard, and you’sve got to remember, you’sre working a mechanically, manually worked reel and they’sre jet-propelled.”

The creatures, known as humboldt squid, were last seen in the county two years ago. Usually found in deeper waters, it’s rare for locals to encounter them on sea or land.
