CHICAGO — Groupon, one of the largest deal sites, has launched GrouponPayments, and is now hoping to provide its merchants, including restaurants and other businesses, with the ability to accept credit-card payments at a lower rate than other providers.

“Our goal is to provide merchants with the most affordable and powerful tools to run and grow their businesses,” said Mihir Shah, VP Mobile and Merchant Products at Groupon. “With groundbreaking pricing and service, Groupon Payments does just that.”

The service is designed for local businesses that run deals with Groupon and is currently only available in the Unites States.

Reuters reports that Groupon shares rose 7.5 per cent to $5.04 on Wednesday when the news was announced.
