Celebrations are underway across the country, but primarily in Halifax Nova Scotia, to commemorate the 214th birthday of Alexander Keith, the city’s famed brewmaster. While most famous now for the beer that bears his name and image, Keith was also a three-time mayor of Halifax as well as a long-time member of the provincial legislature.
Locally the day is marked by raucous parties in the city’s many pubs and taverns, as well as on maritime university campuses such as Dalhousie, St. Mary’s, Mount Allison and Acadia.
Keith died in Halifax in 1873.
