Japan Earthquake Could Impact Seafood Industry

OTTAWA — As devastation mounts in earthquake- and tsunami-ravaged Japan, there’s news Canada’s seafood industry may be inadvertently impacted by the disaster.

CBC News reports that some industry experts fear the natural disaster could affect fish exports. “The country [may become] so focused on relief and rebuilding that they’sre not really thinking more about the high-end goods, and there’s less consumption of gift packs and less eating out at restaurants,” John Sackton, the U.S.-based editor of Seafood.com and industry analyst, told the CBC.

At present, Japan purchases about 40 per cent of the crab fished in Newfoundland and Labrador.
