TORONTO — Top-notch Canadian cheese was fêted last night during the Dairy Farmers of Canada’s Canadian Cheese Grand Prix Gala of Champions. Fromagerie du Presbytère’s Laliberté from Quebec was crowned the Grand Champion.

The farmstead cheese is made from 100-per-cent Canadian cow’s milk. “From all the excellent cheeses the jury tasted, we found Laliberté to be the stand-out. This cheese truly distinguished itself in texture, taste and overall appearance. Its exquisite aromatic triple cream with its tender bloomy rind encases an unctuous well-balanced flavour with hints of mushroom, pastures and root vegetables,” said Phil Bélanger, Canadian Cheese Grand Prix jury chairman.

The ceremony honoured cheese in 27 different categories, ranging from fresh cheese to new categories devoted to Gouda to Smoked Cheese. Other winners included Quality Cheese’s Bella Casara Ricotta (Fresh Cheese); Natural Pastures Cheese Company’s Cherry Bocconcini (Fresh Pasta Filata); Fromagerie P’tit Plaisir’s Fleur de Weedon (Semi-soft Cheese); and The Farm House Natural Cheeses’ Heidi (Firm Cheese- except Cheddar and Gouda).
