Lieutenant-Governor Honours VQA Wines

TORONTO — Twelve Ontario wineries were recently recognized for excellence by Ontario’s Lieutenant-Governor.

The honourable David Onley, pleased with the results in the competition’s inaugural year said, “I am thrilled to help recognize and promote the excellent quality of winemaking in Ontario with this distinction.”

Onley’s office received 277 submissions from 76 Ontario wineries, which met the requirements of vintners quality alliance (VQA). The competition was open to VQA wines, and entries were made with 100-per-cent Ontario-grown and -processed grapes. Adjudicators included 10 of Ontario’s leading wine experts and sommeliers. The awards are presented in partnership with the Canadian Food and Wine Institute at Niagara College.

In no particular order, the list of honourees included Huff Estates Winery, PEC Cuvée Peter F. Huff Sparkling 2008; Mountain Road Wine Company, Mountain Road Vidal Icewine 1999; Ziraldo Estate Winery, Riesling Icewine 2007; Magnotta Winery, Enotrium Gran Riserva 2008; and Southbrook Vineyards, Triomphe Chardonnay 2009.
