TORONTO — Several restaurants in the GTA are taking part in the Toronto-wide “Do the Happy” appeal to raise funds for the city’s Sick Kids Hospital. May has been officially declared SickKids Healthy and Happy month by Toronto Mayor Rob Ford.

Mad Italian Gelato Bar is raising funds for Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital, by offering guests a small gelato for $1 between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on May 27. All proceeds from total sales during those hours will be donated to the Hospital for Sick Kids.

Joel Friedman, proprietor of the gelato bar, says he’s responding to the hospital’s mission statement that every child deserves to be healthy and happy.

“Being a gelato bar, we have a lot of customers with kids, so it’s just makes sense. But also, I have two children myself, with Crohn’s and Colitis concerns, who are patients at the hospital, so I have a personal interest as well,” adds Friedman.

Healthy and Happy is a SickKids effort to build awareness of pressing children’s health issues and the need for community support to further research and patient care.

Other restaurants taking part in the appeal include Topper’s Pizza, Swiss Chalet, Duke of Somerset, Bangkok Garden and others.
