TORONTO — Toronto’s Brookfield Place recently hosted a public tasting of one of the world’s most popular gourmet mustards. Maille mustards were available for sampling — paired with Maille gherkins — as the brand’s rich French heritage was celebrated at the first of several public tastings planned across the country.

“We have strong ties with Canada for over 50 years, and are proud to be the number-1Dijon mustard in the country today,” says Marie-Eve Brunet, product manager, Maille I.D. Foods Corporation. Maille leads the Canadian Dijon mustard market with a 49-per-cent share.

The public was treated to a sampling that included Maille Old-Style mustard, Maille Honey Dijon mustard, and classic Maille Dijon Originale, a condiment still made in Dijon, France.

The Toronto tasting is the first leg of a promotional tour for the iconic company, and Brunet says the tasting at Brookfield Place reminded Torontonians of the product’s high quality. “With our 2012 tastings we want to give Canadians the opportunity to discover the flavours, textures, variety and rich tradition that [make] Maille one of France’s most iconic brands and trusted products for over two centuries.”

The Maille brand, admired among chefs, gourmets and foodies, is one of the oldest food products in the world. The original recipe was created in Marseilles by Antoine Claude Maille — it thrived due to the mustard’s medicinal qualities. Maille’s son, Antoine Jr., founded the mustard company in 1747.

The next Maille tasting is next May 23rd, at First Canadian Place.
