P.E.I. — While potato season is still a few weeks off, the possibility of high grain prices and greater export potential has Maritime farmers cautiously optimistic, CBC News reports.
The boon for P.E.I. is bittersweet, as the Maritime-grown produce will be able to reach formerly inaccessible markets such as Trinidad and Barbados because of the low yield of farmers in countries like Russia and Holland, where crops have suffered due to severe droughts.
“It’s sad that somebody has to have misfortune for us to get in, but that’s the way it is,” Alex Docherty, a potato shipper and seed grower, told the CBC. “It will be a great thing for 375 potato farmers, even better for the 140,000 people who live here.”For the complete story, click here.
