The largest Canadian quick-serve chicken franchise turned 50 in 2019, and while celebrations were plentiful, Mary Brown’s Chicken marked this milestone with serious achievements: unprecedented growth, a reinvigoration of the brand and a launch into international markets.

Our History

Mary Brown’s Chicken launched in St. John’s, N.L. in 1969. Today, the brand is truly iconic in that province, while gaining momentum at a remarkable rate across the rest of Canada.

The shift began in 2007, when the brand was acquired by Newfoundland entrepreneur, Gregory Roberts. The rest, as they say, is history. Roberts brought the brand to the highest global standards and with it, almost tripled the brand’s store count in just over a decade.

Mary Brown’s has seen 15 years of consecutive same-store sales growth, attesting to its established methodologies and product quality. Similarly, the brand has experienced 20 per cent growth year-over-year with an average unit volume of $1,586,000 (top quartile).

Mary Brown’s boasts an extensive support network of team members at all levels and across all functional areas, dedicated to ensuring franchisee success. It’s no wonder Mary Brown’s has earned the Canadian Franchise Association’s Franchisees’ Choice Award an amazing nine consecutive years — a testament to the brand’s commitment to its franchisees.

Our menu appeals to a broad and diverse demographic and includes single-serve and family/group choices. Mary Brown’s stores provide a modern, welcoming atmosphere for sit-down meals as well as convenient take-out orders.

The core menu includes bone-in Signature Chicken, Taters, Big Mary® Chicken Sandwich, Tater Poutine™, Chicken Wraps and Chicken Pop-Ins™ and many other choices. More recently, Mary Brown’s added zesty options reflecting changing taste profiles, including Thai Chicken Pop-Ins, Buffalo Mary Chicken Sandwich and Spicy Chicken.

Mary Brown’s slogan is “Crave Delicious,” reflecting the quality and incredible flavour of our food. Our chicken is fresh Canada Grade-A, hand-cut and hand breaded in-store. Our Taters are also handcrafted in-store from farm fresh Canadian potatoes. Our hero sandwich, Big Mary®, is prepared fresh in each store from a whole chicken breast. In fact, Big Mary was named Canada’s Best Chicken Sandwich by Daily Hive, Edmonton!

Proprietary cookers are used to achieve a golden consistency and superior flavour. Premium ingredients are used in all Mary Brown’s menu items.

Notably, Mary Brown’s has earned the Chicken Farmers of Canada seal for the highest food-safety, animal-care and sustainability standards. 

New Look Propels Growth

Mary Brown’s rebranded in 2018 with a new exterior design, dramatic new store interiors and a refreshed logo. The look is colourful and modern. Store interiors are vibrant and engaging, encouraging guests to relax and enjoy Mary Brown’s genuine hospitality.
