Meat & Poultry Ontario Hosts Annual Red Carpet Awards Gala

GUELPH, Ont. — Meat & Poultry of Ontario’s (MPO) annual Red Carpet Awards Gala was held October 30, with members of the Ontario meat industry gathering to recognize some of the best in the business. 

Doris Valade, formerly of Malabar Super Spice, was given the prestigious Lifetime Member Award at this year’s ceremony. MPO has handed out only 12 Lifetime Member Awards over its 26 year history. 

“This evening’s award celebration plays an important role in bringing our industry together where we pay tribute to our members, recognizing their innovation and excellence,” says Franco Naccarato, executive director, MPO. 

The event also honoured Karlovo, Farm Credit Canada, Sheik Halal Farms, Webers Food Group Limited, Longo Brothers Fruit Markets, Eddystone Meat Products, Wagener’s Meat Products and Agram Meats, which received their 10-year membership plaques, followed by Malabar Super Spice and Windcrest Meat Products, which were honoured for 25 years of loyal MPO membership.  

Fifty-one awards were presented in the 2019 Ontario Finest Meat Competition, with Silver, Gold and Platinum awards across 16 categories.

The Ron Usborne Award of Excellence was presented to Halenda’s Meats, Oshawa for the most points accumulated in the competition.

The Diamond Award was presented to Speducci Mercatto, Toronto for producing the item with the top score across all products with its Wild Boar Prosciutto.

Brent Herrington, from Herrington’s Quality Butchers in Port Perry, took home the title of Ontario’s Finest Butcher. 

“The awards we gave out this evening are not going to just any company, they’re going to family businesses that sacrifice every day to put the highest quality and safest foods out for Ontarians across the province,” says Carol Goriup, president, MPO.
