CALGARY — Canada Olympic Park (COP) may soon house more than great winter sports, it may also be the site of a proposed mixed-use development that will include stores, hotels and restaurants.

According to reports, COP’s WinSport Canada, would like to build a 400,000-sq-ft development on 56 acres of land in a bid to increase the appeal of the Calgary landmark. “The proposed shopping and dining amenities of this project are welcome news for residents in this under-served quadrant of the city,” Michael Kehoe, a retail specialist with the Alberta-based Fairfield Commercial Real Estate Inc., told the Calgary Herald. “Retailers and foodservice tenants seeking locations on the west side are sure to demonstrate high levels of interest even though the project is two to three years into the future.”

The proposal, which is before city council, includes the sale of some 22 hectares of land to the developer. In the meantime, an open house is scheduled for Feb. 22 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Festival Tent at COP.

If all goes as planned, WinSport could begin construction as early as 2012, with plans to open portions of the new space in 2013, reports the Herald.
